To celebrate Robert Moody’s inaugural year as Music Director, PSO’s 2008-09 season is filled with an extraordinary lineup. Highlights include masterworks by Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, as well as contemporary works by John Adams, Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky and John Williams. Special guests include conductor JoAnn Falletta, Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, a quartet of Senegalese drummers, a Beatles tribute band, and William Hudgins, principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony. Of particular note this year is the PSO’s first Endowment Benefit Concert with the world’s most famous soprano, Renée Fleming, in her Maine debut.
The ever-popular Magic of Christmas begins December 12 with conductor Bruce Hangen on the podium. Maestro Hangen was the PSO Music Director and conductor for Magic’s very first performances 29 years ago. The PSO will be joined by the Magic of Christmas Chorus, tenor Matthew DiBattista, MPBN’s Suzanne Nance as narrator, and other special guest artists and ensembles.
The PSO’s 2008-2009 season opens on Tuesday, October 7 with Robert Moody leading a program featuring Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, as well as the Carnival Overture by Dvorak and Liquid Interface by composer and “electronica” artist Mason Bates. Bates will join the orchestra in the performance of his work, and, as DJ Masonic, will “spin” during a post-concert After Party.
All concerts take place at Portland’s Merrill Auditorium. Subscriptions are currently still available, along with discounts for purchase of three or more concerts. Special pricing is often available for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more. Contact PortTix for details.
