PORTLAND, Maine – Local favorite Bruce Hangen will return to Portland in December to conduct this year’s Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) Magic of Christmas performances at Merrill Auditorium. Tickets go on sale at noon on Monday, May 5 for all performances.
The PSO’s Magic of Christmas is a long-standing holiday tradition featuring extraordinary music, song and entertainment celebrating the many aspects of the Christmas season. This year’s production welcomes the return of Bruce Hangen, the PSO Music Director (1976-1985) when Magic of Christmas was first conceived and performed 28 years ago. Hangen is currently the director of orchestra programs at Boston Conservatory and recently retired as principal Guest Conductor of the Boston Pops.
“We are thrilled and honored to welcome Bruce Hangen back to lead this year’s Magic of Christmas,” says Ari Solotoff, PSO’s Executive Director. “We believe that honoring the beginnings of this beloved tradition, that now extends through three generations of New Englanders, is a wonderful way to celebrate the season. And what better way to get your Christmas shopping out of the way before summer even starts?”
Magic of Christmas is sponsored by Hannaford Supermarkets, IDEXX Laboratories, KeyBank and Northeast Delta Dental.
A total of fourteen performances run December 12 - 21, with morning, afternoon and evening shows. Tickets can be ordered beginning May 5th online at www.porttix.com, at the PortTix box office, 20 Myrtle St., Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., or by phone, 207-842-0800. Discounts for most performances are available for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more.
