PORTLAND, Maine – On Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) presents a program celebrating the spirit of Russia, conducted by PSO Artistic Advisor Joseph Silverstein. The program will include Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka’s brilliant overture to the opera Russlan and Ludmilla, called “the most seminal work in the history of Russian music,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s bright and joyful Symphony No. 9, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring 20-year-old pianist Yuja Wang, recipient of the prestigious 2006 Gilmore Young Artist Award. Piano Concerto No. 3 is considered by many to be one of the most difficult and complex piano concertos.
The San Francisco Chronicle declared, “…Wang has the energetic, fearless imagination of youth and the probing sensitivity that in most artists comes only with maturity… To hear an artist so extravagantly gifted on every front is to realize how much compromise is usually involved in hearing even the most impressive virtuosos.”
Violinist and conductor Joseph Silverstein, widely regarded as one of Boston's most influential musical citizens while serving as concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the orchestras at New England Conservatory. He is also currently Principal Guest Conductor of Seattle's Northwest Chamber Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Utah Symphony. Much sought after as a consultant to orchestras, Silverstein has served as artistic advisor to the Hartford, Kansas City, Louisville, Baltimore, Toledo, Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Winnipeg and Oakland symphonies. Maestro Silverstein will lead the Concert Conversation at 6:15 p.m. in the Rehearsal Hall. This is free for all ticket holders.
