PSO POPS! WITH MUSIC BY BILL CONTI AND HENRY MANCINI BEGINS MARCH 15 AT MERRILL AUDITORIUM

PORTLAND , Maine – PSO Pops! presents music of Henry Mancini and Bill Conti under the direction of Oscar and Emmy Award-winning composer and conductor Bill Conti himself. The performances are Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 16 at 2:30 p.m at Merrill Auditorium in Portland .
The program highlights one of the most popular composers of our time, Henry Mancini. Mancini’s music, with slightly more than 100 nominations, was ubiquitous in film and television during the mid-1960s. Some of his many hits, including the theme from the TV series “Peter Gunn” and the memorable instrumental music for the many “Pink Panther” films, have entered the pop music lexicon. Songs such as “ Moon River ,” from the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” have become standard classics. Conti is one of Hollywood 's most sought-after composers and conductors for both film and television, with memorable scores such as “For Your Eyes Only” from James Bond, and the powerful anthem “Gonna Fly Now” from Rocky.
Guest conductor Conti has acted as orchestral director for the Academy Awards show for fourteen years and has been a guest conductor for many prestigious orchestras including the Boston Pops, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra at the Blossom Music Festival, the National Symphony at Wolf Trap, the Houston Symphony Ochestra, and the Baltimore Symphony.
