PSO SUNDAY CLASSICAL CONCERT FEBRUARY 24 FEATURES BEETHOVEN PIANO CONCERTO

(More news)
PORTLAND, Maine – On February 24, the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) presents a rousing matinee program filled with classical favorites as part of the Sunday Classical series. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. and is conducted by guest Arthur Post, who will also lead the Concert Conversation at 1:15 p.m.

The concert opens with Siegfried Idyll by Richard Wagner, a tender depiction of loving domesticity that the composer wrote as a birthday present for his wife. Next, audiences will sample tastes of flamenco, fandango, and other Andalusian folks music in Manuel de Falla’s Three Cornered Hat Suite No. 1. Rounding out the program, the award-winning young pianist Benjamin Hochman joins the PSO as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, magnificent, powerful but full of surprises -- Beethoven breaks the mold at every turn in this exciting piece.

Now in his sixth acclaimed season as Music Director of the San Juan Symphony, Arthur Post is building a reputation for groundbreaking programming that combines the masterworks of the orchestral repertoire with music reflecting local cultures and concerns. He enjoys a distinguished record with major orchestras in the United States and Europe. As a guest conductor in Europe, Arthur Post made his debut with the Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin in 1993. Other international appearances include the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Saarländische Radio Orchestra, Orchestre National de Toulouse, Singapore and Jerusalem symphony orchestras.

The Washington Post praised pianist Benjamin Hochman’s “flowing artistry” and The Cincinnati Post wrote that he “shone in his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut” and had “a crystal clear tone and articulation to match.” The pianist's honors include the “Outstanding Pianist” citation at the Verbier Academy, the Festorazzi Award given by the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music, second prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, the "Partosh Prize" awarded by the Israeli Minister of Culture for best performance of an Israeli work, and first prize at the National Piano Competition of the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem.

Hochman’s PSO appearance is underwritten by Atlantica Group, a division of Pierce Atwood Consulting, LLC and the Consulate General of Israel to New England.

Tickets for all PSO performances can be ordered online at www.porttix.com, by phone at 207-842-0800, or at the PortTix box office, 20 Myrtle St., Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more.
