(More news)
PORTLAND, Maine – One of the most famous works of classical music opens the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO)’s 2008 lineup of concerts Tuesday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Portland’s Merrill Auditorium.
Led by guest conductor Alasdair Neale, the Tuesday Classical concert opens with the exuberant “Short Ride in a Fast Machine” by American composer John Adams, followed by Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, “Prague,” and two works by Strauss. First, the Serenade for Winds, a melodic tribute to Mozart, and then Also sprach Zarathustra, made famous as the theme to “2001: A Space Odyssey” and which Strauss called a “symphonic poem … intended as a homage to Nietzsche's genius.” A Concert Conversation with Maestro Neale, free to ticket holders, will be held in the Rehearsal Hall at 6:15 p.m.
Alasdair Neale is Music Director of the Marin Symphony, San Rafael, CA and also holds the positions of Music Director of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and Principal Guest Conductor of the New World Symphony and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
The concert is sponsored by Verrill Dana, and will be recorded for broadcast on MPBN’s Maine Stage on February 20, 2008.
Tickets for all PSO performances can be ordered online at www.porttix.com, by phone at 207-842-0800, or at the PortTix box office, 20 Myrtle St., Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more.
