Instrument: Flugelhorn

Micah Maurio spent the first 8 years of his life in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  His family then moved to Caribou, Maine, where his mother grew up.  It was in Caribou that Micah first began in music.  At age 11, he decided to begin on the trumpet.  He played in his grade school's concert band under the direction of the late Waldren Babbidge, and played in the CHS concert band and jazz band for four years, under the direction of Vaughn McLaughlin, and choral and jazz choir with Vicky King, before continuing his education at USM.  During high school, he placed first in the Maine All-State Jazz auditions in 2003-04, and Maine All-State 2004.  In 2002, he was one of six high school trumpeters in the state a spot in the Maine High School All-Star Jazz Band, which opened for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.  He also won the Outstanding Soloist Award in the Big Band category at the Maine State Jazz Festival in 03, and again in 04 for the Jazz Combo category.  At USM, Micah has been a featured soloist in the following ensembles: Concert Band, Lab Jazz Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Combos, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Ensembles, and Jazz Choir.  He won a spot in the 2006 and 2007 Annual Honors Recitals, as well as the 2008 Concerto Competition.  Micah is a student of Betty Rines (Classical) and Trent Austin (Jazz).
