Established on both the concert and opera stage, Mr. Cutlip has performed with a distinguished list of conductors that includes Nicholas McGegan, Yves Abel, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Gerard Schwarz, and Donald Runnicles. In the fall of 2005 he sang the role of Maurice in Jake Heggie’s The End of the Affair with the Seattle Opera. Opera News’ review of the production stated, “The star of the evening was Cutlip, whose commitment to the tormented character of Maurice Bendrix was moving beyond words, his diction as well as his sweetness and lightness of timbre ideal.”
In the 2006-07 season, Mr. Cutlip returns to Seattle Opera as Marcello in La Bohème, and performs Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with both the Austin Lyric and Arizona opera companies. He also performs Messiah with the National Philharmonic and San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Richmond Symphony, and Hänsel und Gretel with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. He performs arias by Handel for Mantagnana with the orchestra La Stagione Frankfurt and sings the role of Gobrias in Handel’s Belshazzar at the Göttingen Festival in Germany, as well as the title role in Philip Glass’ Orphee at Glimmerglass Opera in the summer.
Mr. Cutlip’s 2005-06 season included Maurice in Seattle Opera’s The End of the Affair, Garibaldo in Dallas Opera’s Rodelinda, the title role in Don Giovanni with Opera Birmingham, and Nicandro in Handel’s Atalanta with Philharmonia Baroque and at the Göttingen Festival. He performed Messiah with Minnesota Orchestra, Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Westchester Philharmonic. Also on the concert stage he performed St. Matthew Passion with the Handel and Haydn Society at Boston’s Symphony Hall, with Musica Sacra at Carnegie Hall, and with the North Carolina Symphony. He sang Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes with the Anchorage Concert Association, and performed concerts with the Winter Park Bach Festival. In the summer of 2006, Mr. Cutlip appeared in his San Francisco Opera debut as Dunois in The Maid of Orleans. Other summer engagements included the Brahms Requiem with the Berkshire Choral Festival and John Musto’s Quartets at the Caramoor Festival.
Recent opera highlights include Mr. Cutlip’s performance of Harlequin in Ariadne auf Naxos with Seattle Opera. He performed the same role with Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, as well as Achilles in Giulio Cesare. Mr. Cutlip has performed Papageno in Die Zauberflöte with New York City Opera, Opera Birmingham, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and has performed King Minos in Handel’s Arianna in Creta at the Göttingen Festival. He was Onegin in Eugene Onegin with Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Malatesta in Don Pasquale with Fort Worth Opera, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte with Arizona Opera, and Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Birmingham and Opera Mississippi. Other engagements include Valentin in Faust with the Portland Opera Repertory Theater, and the title role in Le nozze di Figaro with Wolf Trap Opera and Banff Opera Centre.
Mr. Cutlip has performed with nearly every major North American orchestra. These engagements include performances of Messiah with Handel and Haydn Society, National Symphony Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra. He has performed Carmina Burana with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, and Copland’s Old American Songs with the New York Philharmonic and Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Cutlip has sung Elijah with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Christ on the Mount of Olives with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Haydn’s The Seasons with Philadelphia Baroque, Britten’s War Requiem with Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Berlioz’s Lélio with Portland Symphony Orchestra, Adams’ The Wound-Dresser with Colorado Music Festival, Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Orchestra of St Luke’s, Bruckner’s Te Deum with Houston Symphony Orchestra, Fauré’s Requiem with Cathedral Choral Society, Handel’s Acis et Galatea at the Mozart Mozart Festival, and Handel’s Apollo e Dafne with the New World Symphony Orchestra.
A distinctive element in Mr. Cutlip’s career is his ongoing collaboration with both well-established dance companies and avant-garde ensembles, starting with his first appearance with the New York City Ballet, performing Ives songs. He has toured internationally with the Hamburg Ballet singing Bernstein’s Dances, and has appeared on European and American tours of Philip Glass’ Les Enfants Terribles, including the world premiere in Zug, Switzerland. His performance of the Glass work was released on Glass’ Orange Mountain label. Mr. Cutlip has appeared with the Mark Morris Dance Company in performances of Morris’ popular full-staged dance production of Handel’s L'Allegro, il Pensoroso el il Moderato at Lincoln Center, the Ravinia Festival, and at Cal Performances on the UC Berkeley campus.
Frequently heard in performances with New York Festival of Song, Mr. Cutlip gave the world premiere of American Love Songs – a set of 10 commissioned pieces for vocal quartet – at the Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd Street Y, appeared in a program of commissioned works at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and also toured with NYFOS to Louisville for Rorem’s Evidence of Things Not Seen.
