John Schnell
Principal Trumpet
John Schnell has been principal trumpet with the Portland Symphony Orchestra since 1973. He has performed as featured soloist with the Orchestra on television and on all three concert series: Classical, Pops, and Chamber. Mr. Schnell has performed such works as the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto, "La Virgin de la Macarena," and Herbert L. Clark's "The Bride of the Waves" with Keith Brion.
He was principal trumpet and soloist with the Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra of Boston for eleven years, and has been alternate player with the Boston Pops and recorded and toured with the Boston Symphony since 1978. He has performed throughout Maine as soloist with such groups as the Sebago Long Lake Festival, and with Musica Tricinia, a trio of two trumpets and keyboards. He has also performed as principal trumpet with the Beethovenhalle Orchestra in Bonn, Germany.
Mr. Schnell is instructor of trumpet and lecturer at the University of Southern Maine. His hobby of wine collecting has incurred a growing wine cellar of over 600 bottles. He enjoys reading about wine and has taught wine courses for over three years.
Mr. Schnell's principal trumpet instructors are Armando Ghitalla and Charles Schlueter, past and present principal trumpets of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He holds performance degrees from Florida State University and the New England Conservatory of Music.
