John Boden
Principal Horn
In 1981, John C. Boden accepted the unique opportunity to jointly serve as Principal horn of the Portland Symphony and professor at the University of Southern Maine. The success of this joint venture lead to the additional joint positions of Principal Clarinet and Concertmaster. John has been active in the evolution of the Portland Symphony having served on the orchestra committee for more than half of his twenty seasons.
John is currently an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Southern Maine, where he teaches horn, horn ensemble, theory and history to non-majors, and brass pedagogy. John loves to teach horn and works with students from the University of New Hampshire and Colby College, as well as his private studio.
John maintains an active freelance schedule as a member of the New Hampshire Symphony and the Portland Brass Quintet. He has performed with nearly every orchestra in New England in a variety of genres from productions of Phantom of the Opera to concerts with the Boston Symphony.
John holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Masters of Music Degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Concervatory. His studies on horn have been with James Funkhouser of the Kansas City Philharmonic, Frank Brouk and Dale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony and with Philip Farkas. In 1991, John completed a sabbatical leave from USM to spend time studying the history and performance practices of the natural horn with Richard Seraphinoff at the Indiana University and with Douglas Hill at the University of Wisconsin.
As a performer on natural horn, John is a member of the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston. He performs with the Boston Baroque Orchestra and has appeared with the Helicon Society in New York, the Classical Orchestra in Philadelphia, the Old Fairfield Orchestra in Conneticut and with the Sante Fe Pro Musica in New Mexico. In 1999, he recorded the Lutheran Mass in F Major by J.S. Bach with the Publick Music Society of Rochester, New York.
During the 1995-96 season, John took a year leave of absence and served as principal horn of the Utah Symphony under the direction of Joseph Silverstein. While in Utah, John taught horn at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and performed in the L.A. East Recording Studios.
John and Dawn Boden operate and teach in the Boden Music Studios in Liberty, Maine, where they reside with their children Daniel and Ashley.
