Support the PSO

For generations, the Portland Symphony Orchestra has been a vital part of our community. Whether on the stage of Merrill Auditorium, at a local school or at one of Maine's many outdoor performance venues, your PSO makes music that is central to the cultural life we all enjoy. Beyond the stage, PSO musicians work closely with music teachers, parents and children in their communities through our educational outreach programs.

Like all great cultural institutions, the Portland Symphony relies on private donations. The PSO earns some 60% of its annual operating revenue from ticket sales. To make up the other 40% of the costs of producing concerts and programs, the PSO relies on contributions from the community. More than $1,000,000 in contributed revenue is needed each year to sustain the Symphony. Our vibrancy reflects the thoughtful generosity of citizens who want to play a part in building great organizations for their community, who want the best possible quality of life for everyone in the community now and for generations to come.

A contribution to the PSO supports:

  • An outstanding concert season with more than 30 classical, pops and holiday performances of the highest quality, many including world-class guest artists
  • 20,000 schoolchildren a year who attend KinderKonzert education programs, where they explore the different families of orchestral instruments through fun, interactive programs with Portland Symphony musicians
  • 14,000 middle-schoolers who attend our Youth Concerts at Merrill Auditorium, where many of them are hearing a full symphony orchestra for the first time
  • Life-enhancing experiences that reach an audience of more than 80,000 annually
  • Exceptionally talented professional musicians whose presence in our community enriches our teaching institutions, our music industry and our arts
  • Distinction for our city as a center for first rate arts, culture and entertainment that promotes healthy social and economic development in southern Maine
